Japanese cosmetics speciality chemical provider, Nikkol, finalises the formation of its joint venture with industrial US bioscience providers, Amyris, commercially labelled as Aprinnova.

Newly-created Aprinnova

Nikkol is formed of seven key companies, which individually deal with sales, R&D, manufacturing, safety and efficacy evaluation based on colloid chemical and skin science in both Japanese and overseas markets.

The Group markets itself as a one-stop service provider that is built on a core strategy of “Green, Clean, Sustainable” to achieve success and credibility through new brand products, innovative formulations, bespoke consultations and safety evaluations.

Cosmetics Design first announced the joint venture in December 2016, when the duo revealed that it would form a new joint company to concentrate on the innovation and development of its skin care ingredients.

Fostering existing ties

The pair first partnered in 2011, when Nikkol became a distributor for Amyris. Now operating under the brand name of Aprinnova, Nikkol and Amyris have completed its 50-50 joint venture to produce sustainable cosmetic ingredient solutions.

“Our long-term relationship has enabled us to move quickly in completing formation of the joint venture and this relationship will serve us well in serving our customers and growing Aprinnova’s presence worldwide,” said Shizuo Ukaji, President and CEO of Nikko Chemicals in Nikkol.

“Aprinnova will continue its mission of providing innovative renewable cosmetic ingredients to the world’s finest brands and with Nikkol’s support achieve further growth and market penetration,” added John Melo, President and CEO, Amyris.

Maximising market placement

Following the finalisation of the venture, together, the new Aprinnova label will combine existing products from Nikkol and Amyris’ product ranges.

Nikko’s “Sugar Squalane” brand of emollients will be sold in Japan, China and Southeast Asia, along with Amyris’ Neossance Squalane and Neossance Hemisqualane, through existing distribution channels in the US, EU, LATAM and Korean markets.

Going forward, the Aprinnova product range will be manufactured at an existing facility in Leland, North Carolina, US.

“As leading cosmetic brands further adopt renewable ingredients in response to consumer demand and to support their reputation for innovation, Aprinnova will continue to be a leading supply source for them,” said Caroline Hadfield, Senior Vice President of Personal Care at Amyris.

“With the product development resources provided by Nikkol and Amyris’s ability to create disruptive, high-performance products, Aprinnova will be a force for innovation in the cosmetic market.”
