Skin care - regulatory updates you do not want to miss!

The ever-changing skin care segment is seeing break-neck growth and demand for natural and anti-ageing products. Thus, keeping up with legislation on a global scale can be a challenge..

Ahead of Cosmetics Design's fifth edition of the online Skincare Ingredients event event on June 24th, regulatory specialist Alain Khaiat gives a sneak peek at what he will be discussing in his session: 'A global regulatory overview of the skin care market – what you need to know.'

The industry veteran will deliver a presentation around the most recent guidelines in Europe, the US and Asia's skin care segments, as well as an update on any new requirements.

During the session, the founder of Seers Consulting will also look at the use of natural and organic oils or indeed multi-functional products regarding any additional/special requirements, as global demand for these type of products rises.

Q&A with the expert..

1. Your talk features a global regulatory overview of the skin care market; are there many updates/changes to note?

The regulatory field is ever changing. What is important is not how many changes there have been, but to know what those changes are. Any change, wherever big or small, can have an impact on a product's compliance and can be extremely important if you have such a product.

2. Which market is seeing the most updates in skin care regulations – the EU, US or Asia, and why?

The EU regulation is the most recent one, it is also science based. All regulations have the ultimate objective of protecting consumers, but they do this via different paths.

Take for example the US regulation on cosmetics dates to 1936, it is outdated and does not take into consideration the evolution of the scientific knowledge which has happened since then.

Asia is a mixed pot; on one side ASEAN has adopted the basic principles of EU regulation, however, China is still struggling with a nascent local industry which does not grasp all of the scientific aspects.

3. Where do you think attendees will benefit most from your session?

I hope that those attending my presentation will take on board both the similarities and differences on how products are regulated in various parts of the world. While the industry prioritises educating itself about the similarities, we also have to be aware of the differences, as these can create a lot of work for a company or may even get it into trouble in some cases.

4. How does this session differ from what some may have already heard at the recent in-cosmetics show?

Not everyone had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona for in-cosmetics, so this online event is an ideal opportunity for a lot of people to catch up. Also at in-cosmetics, the workshop was mainly focused around Asian regulations. On June 24th, I will be expanding my talk to a global overview and highlighting the different regulatory frameworks.

5. What will you be discussing in regards to the use of natural and organic oils or multi-functional products?

I will highlight the problem consumers are facing with some 40 (or more) different logos certifying that an ingredient or a product is natural or organic. The ISO committee has been working with all concerned parties that are willing to do so, in trying to establish an international standard based on consensus.
