Specialty ingredients player TRI-K has expanded its ingredients capabilities with the acquisition of US-based business Surfactants International.

TRI-K, which is a part of the India-based Galaxy Surfactants group acquired the business from its current owner, Actives International , a New Jersey-based business specializing in the supply of actives to the personal care market.

The acquisition, which was made effective from January 16, 2014, also includes Surfactants International division Surety Laboratories, which is the research and development wing of the business.

Building the company's portfolio of specialty ingredients

Surfactants International was established in 1977 and the manufacturing and supply of surfactants, polymers and preservatives, with the business operations mainly focused on the North America market.

According to Galaxy, the acquisition serves to strengthen its footprint in the surfactant and preservative categories in the United States,  providing an expanded portfolio to its customers in both the personal care and household industries.

The acquisition of both Surfactants International and its Surety Laboratories division will lead to the creation of a new division within the TRI-K umbrella, known as the ‘Performance Products Division’.

Galaxy expands global footprint from India base

This means that the Galaxy will combine its own product lines as well as the newly surfactants, blends, preservatives and biocides from the newly acquired business through the TRI-K sales and supply chain in the US.

Galaxy Surfactants bought a majority stake in the TRI-K business back in 2009, giving it an important footing in the US market that it has now built on with the most recent acquisition.

In that same year, Galaxy simultaneously acquired a majority stake in Oberhausen Technology Center, Germany - a research and development facility devoted to the development of high technology personal care products – increasing the company’s footprint into Europe.

The company is also the North American distributor for Switzerland-based stem cell ingredient specialist Mibelle.
