Japanese cosmetics company, Septem Soken, has confirmed a three year extension to its research at the Eskitis Institute's 'Nature Bank', with which it looks to discover potential new ingredients for skin care products.

The Nature Bank resource is a collection of chemical diversity from the natural world.

The beauty brand, which focuses on natural cosmetics made up of ‘only ingredients that are truly essential for the skin’, will continue its current research at the Griffith University facility, which has so far uncovered several potential cosmetic ingredients.

“This is the first time Nature Bank has been screened for compounds that could be used in products other than drugs,” notes Eskitis Institute director, Professor Ronald J Quinn.

Research

To date, Septem Soken’s research at the facility has led to the discovery of three plants with the potential to provide new ingredients in cosmetics, skin care products and functional foods, according to Quinn.

Led by Dr Akihiro Aioi from Septem Soken, the research at the biodiversity facility in Queensland, Australia, has particular potential for sunscreen compound discovery, according to the beauty brand.

Griffith University and Eskitis are set to benefit from any products Spetem Soken develops as a result of the research at their facility, thanks to a Collaboration and Licence Agreement, which includes a provision for the research unit to receive royalties.

Under the Queensland Government's biodiscovery legislation, Griffith will then also be required to pay a proportion of any proceeds to the government.

Yousuke Yamashita, Septem Soken, and Debra Henly, Griffith Sciences, sign the extension.

Usually perceived as an integrated drug discovery platform, the Nature Bank also holds potential for cosmetics research, made up of a library of over 200,000 optimised natural product fractions from plants and marine invertebrates.

Professor Debra Henly of Griffith Siences took part in the recent signing ceremony.

"We are very pleased that Septem Soken has chosen to work with us because they can access Nature Bank, and use our unique resource to develop natural products that are highly appealing to consumers who want to ensure they use cosmetics that are sourced from nature," she said.

"We look forward to helping the company develop future discoveries into new products."
