20th APHCA Hair Olympics in the Philippines

Hair and make-up experts from 18 Asia-Pacific (APAC) countries will compete at the coveted APHCA awards in the Philippines.

The annual Asia-Pacific Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association’s  (APHCA) 2016, the 20th anniversary of the coined Hair Olympics, will take place between 25th and 26th October 2016 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City, Manila, Philippines.

Hair and make-up experts from all 18 countries in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region will compete in this year’s show, entitled “Beauty Showdown in Manila”.

Since 1997, when the event was first created, competitors have displayed their talent, expertise and experience in a range of precise and creative designs in front of judges and the audience to be announced as the winner.

From its five original member countries from Southeast Asia, APHCA has now grown to include Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China (Hong Kong and Macau), Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines and is still organised and run by the event’s founder and president, beauty specialist Ricky Reyes.

Showcasing the ingenuity and talent in the make-up and hairdressing trade from across 18 Asia Pacific countries, Filipino skill and artistry will again be put to the test this year as they compete with the best of the country, to the best of the world,” says APHCA president Ricky Reyes. Standards for this year’s competition will be extremely high as participants for sure will try to surpass last year’s entries. “I am actually preparing myself to be blown away again by the calibre of the entries,” Reyes added.

Winning criteria

The judging panel will be made up of expert judges from the participating delegations. Judges will select their winners based on a range of criteria that includes the hair and make-up techniques used, originality and creativity.

The competition, which contains two categories, is made up of Category A where competitors will be asked to complete a men’s cut and blow dry, avant-garde colour, evening party make-up and bridal make-up.

Competing brands will then undertake the Category B task, which is the total look competition, nail art competition and evening party hairstyle. The champion from each category will be given awards and citations.

This year’s hotly-anticipated hair and beauty event will also include seminars and workshops and a trade fair of over 50 booths featuring local and international beauty items from participating APHCA member countries.

The 20th Hair Olympics will take place with the support of the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) through the Department of Tourism (DOT), Zen Institute, Air Asia, Skin Care Formula by Dr. Alvin, Philbeauty, Selective Professional  and Travelpros.
