Mumbai-based Galaxy Surfactants has purchased a majority stake in US-based ingredients supplier Tri-K in order to expand on its personal care portfolio and consolidate its global presence.

The transaction was completed on the 1st of July and makes Galaxy the majority owner of both Tri-K and Maybrook, with Dr Gerd Dahms & Associates holding a minority share.

Expanding portfolio

Tri-K, which was previously acquired by the Kemira group in April 2007, is a global distributor of cosmetics ingredients and is based in New Jersey, USA. The company produces a range of ingredients for lipsticks, mascaras, hair care, skin care and toiletries.

Galaxy, a supplier of both home and personal care products stands to benefit from this acquisition by adding this range to its specialism in cosmetic ingredients.

In addition, Galaxy has also acquired a majority shareholding in Oberhausen Technology, who had previously worked with Tri-K, as part of this agreement. As a modern R&D facility for personal care products, this will also be a useful tool in the expansion of Galaxy’s personal care portfolio.

“The combination of Tri-K’s specialty actives portfolio, Galaxy’s line of products and Oberhausen Technology Center’s expertise will be a potent combination to address our customers’ aspirations for skin, oral and hair care”, said Geera Ramakrishnan, Galaxy Director of Home and Personal care.

Consolidate global presence

Galaxy Surfactants is already a global supplier, headquartered in Mumbai, India and does business in 90 countries. However, the addition of Tri-K in USA and Oberhausen Technology Center in Germany will strengthen its worldwide presence and reinforce the company’s strategy for expansion.

The specialty chemicals strategy of Galaxy is focused on the priority markets of Europe and the Americas. This acquisition strengthens Galaxy’s global presence and gives us an expanded product portfolio, allowing us to serve better our customers in the cosmetics and personal care industry, “ said Ramakrishnan.

Tri-K has had a tumultuous few years, having been renamed Kemira in 2007 with its acquisition by this group before subsequently reverting to the previous name Tri-K in December last year.

One of the company’s major launches has been a range of nano-based gels which aimed to enhance the efficacy of skin care products. Although headquartered in New Jersey, it also has manufacturing facilities in New Hampshire and employs 40 people.

It has not been revealed how much the majority stake cost Galaxy Surfactants.
