US-based colors and fragrances supplier Sensient reported slightly above average third quarter figures for 2011 boosted by favorable currency translations and a strong colors group.

Total revenue generated in the third quarter in 2011 was reported to be $363.8m, a single digit increase of 6.7 percent in comparison to the same quarter the prior year 2010 which saw figures of $340.9m.

This figure was given a boost by a favorable currency exchange increasing both revenue and operating income by four percent. A weak US dollar has positively impacted Sensient’s business sectors outside of the US.

Strength in colors

The Milwaukee-based firm experienced good growth in revenues from the previous year thanks to a strong colors group with demand for natural colors in particular being the driving force, according to the company.

Total revenue for colors was $121m in 2011, which was a single digit increase of 6.8 percent in comparison to the same period in 2010.

The figures for operating income for the third quarter were more inspiring with a double digit increase of 14.2 percent, from $20m in 2010 to $22.9m in 2011, indicating an area of strong interest for the company.

Likewise, Sensient has continued its efforts in expanding its colors segment with a recent acquisition in Brazil.

"We continue to see opportunities for growth and we have built the infrastructure that will allow us to convert these opportunities into new business. I am very optimistic about the Company's future", commented Kenneth Manning, CEO of Sensient.

Coloring the world with investments

The company recently reached an agreement to acquire Brazilian color cosmetics company Les Colorants Wackherr.

This follows on from previous investments made in recent years in the colors sector with facilities in Germany, Italy and China.

Last year, Sensient also expanded its colors group headquarters in St Louis, Missouri with an additional 25,000 sq ft production facility specifically for natural colors.
