Bayer MaterialScience to reveal acne skin care developments at in-cosmetics
The international company is set to present its latest developments in acne skin care treatments based on its Baycusan family of film-forming polyurethanes at this year’s in-cosmetics trade fair in Barcelona next month.

Baycusan polyurethane products, specifically designed for the cosmetics industry are said to differ from conventional polymers in that they contain no solvents.

The polymer producer claims they are environmentally-friendly and can be used to formulate hair care, sun care and acne treatment skin care products.

Tried and tested

According to the company, a new and recent in vivo method based on fluorescence was developed to show how long salicylic acid remains on the skin when different acne treatment formulations are applied.

Dr. Frank Rothbarth of Bayer MaterialScience says the study demonstrated that the active supports the controlled release of salicylic acid into the stratum corneum, thus reducing salicylic acid’s high potential for irritation.

Many current acne treatment products are based on salicylic acid, whereas our preservative-free polyurethane dispersion can significantly improve the efficacy of such formulations.”

The influence on the efficacy of acne treatment was also evaluated on the backs of subjects suffering from acne.

In addition to a control formulation, a test with "salicylic acid (Formulation A) and salicylic acid and Baycusan (Formulation B) found that treatment with Formulation B produced a greater improvement in the acne symptoms," says Rothbarth.

In-cosmetics

This year’s in-cosmetics event, held at the Gran Via exhibition centre in Barcelona from 17-19 April 2012, promises to be bigger than previous editions with already 11,700 m2 of floor space booked and over 530 exhibitors signed up.

The event will play host to more than 50 new exhibitors from countries including China, Korea and Switzerland, as well as welcoming back companies such as Croda, DSM and Merck.

Tying in with the Barcelona setting, the theme chosen for the in-focus feature in 2012 is ‘Solar Beauty’.

A Beach will form the centrepiece of the programme and will house a full-scale innovation platform, combining different interactive and entertaining areas, designed to help industry players evaluate the latest developments and anticipate future trends,” Cathy Laporte, group marketing manager for in-cosmetics, told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

The theme will be echoed throughout the event with a solar trail pointing to exhibitors with Solar Beauty innovations and formulations, while the in-focus educational programme will feature a scientific seminar on sun protection.
