As consumers increasingly seek products that serve a variety of cosmetic and beauty needs, we spoke to Cynthia Leung, Brand Manager at The Australian Paw Paw Company about market opportunities, ingredient considerations and its latest skin care range, which contains the Paw Paw fruit.

“Busy lifestyles, especially in the emerging Asia-Pacific region, have meant consumers are increasingly looking for multi-purpose products,” said Cynthia Leung, Brand Manager, The Australian Paw Paw Company.

As Kline’s recently published Personal Care Ingredients: Global Market Analysis report emphasises the effect that busy lifestyles are having on consumers' cosmetic and beauty routines, it is a lucrative time for the multifunctional market.

“As consumers are now simplifying their daily beauty routines and require skin care products that are easy to use and provide multifunctional benefits, multifunctional products are on the rise,” emphasised Leung.

As a result, products that offer several benefits including skin whitening, cleansing and moisturisation, as well as those products that are natural and organic, are emerging in the Asia-Pacific market.

"Consequently, this trend is leading to growth in the popularity of multifunctionalingredients," said Leung.

In addition, in a report titled Facial Care Market - Asia-Pacific Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2013 - 2019, Transparency Market Research found that the Asia-Pacific facial care market is poised to expand at a 6.90% CAGR from 2013 to 2019 rising to a value of US$39.7 bn (€34.5bn) by the end of the forecast period.

“The facial care market has been witnessing rapid growth in Asia Pacific thanks to the rising popularity of multifunctional products and the widening scope of distribution channels,” highlighted Leung.
“We believe the multifunctional trend is here to stay.”

Unique Ingredients

Following two years of R&D, skin care manufacturer Australian Paw Paw decided to use certified organic Paw Paw fruit in its Made in Australia range of natural skin care products.

Bringing a natural and organic product to market requires additional considerations during the formulations process: “We also make sure all ingredients are dermatologically sensitive and won’t cause any skin irritation,” added Leung.

The Australian Paw Paw range, sourced directly from Byron Bay on the far North coast of New South Wales, is a nutrient-rich fruit that contains vitamins A, B, C, along with multivitamins, Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E, to help with skin repair and hydration. Its collection of naturally-orientated skin care products is suitable for consumers with sensitive and eczema prone skin and the range is also free from artificial colours, artificial fragrances, parabens, and SLS.

As anti-pollutant products remain popular for consumers living in Asia-Pacific countries, the products contain Exo-P, which also protect the skin from air pollutants and the pollutant PM2.5. “Paw Paw is considered by many natural therapists and traditional healers to have anti-inflammatory properties and is used in wound healing,” said Leung.

Highlighting the importance of the “feel and smell”, the company also paired the Paw Paw fruit with the natural fragrance of the native plant Kangaroo Paw.
