The category for skin care that targets the delicate eye area has exploded in recent years with a dizzying array of choice that leaves many consumers bemused. So which one rates best?

According to a comprehensive review of 150 eye creams carried out by Seattle-based consumer review resource reviews.com, la crème de la crème is Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum.

According to the team at reviews.com, the product scored top marks because it is the ultimate all-round eye cream “delivering truly exceptional results for every eye concern, offering the best age-defying bang for its buck — from start to finish.”

The Dr. Dennis Gross eye product was selected from a short-list of eight other finalists that all made the final line up thanks for the main part for their efficacy and skin compatibility.

The list contains a mixture of indie and multinational beauty brands, but it is interesting to note that the top three rated products are all indie beauty brands, underlining how this part of the industry continues to raise the bar on product standards.

The top eight eye creams

  1. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum
  2. Neocutis Lumière Bio-Restorative Eye Cream
  3. Kate Somerville Line Release Under Eye Repair Cream
  4. Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum
  5. Philosophy Miracle Worker Retinoid Eye Repair Cream
  6. RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream
  7. Clinique ‘Superdefense’ Age Defense Eye Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 20
  8. Andalou Naturals Luminous Eye Serum

The editorial team at reviews.com clocked up a total of 35 hours researching the eye skin care category, which included the analysis of science and beauty publications, interviewing experts and poring over consumer reviews on beauty websites as well as industry awards.

The team also consulted with celebrity esthetician Kerry Benjamin, creator of Stacked Skincare and Susan Rafty, cosmetic chemist to companies such as Guthy-Renker and Physicians Formula.

Leveraging the expertise of these individuals, the team was able to pinpoint what are realistic claims for products in this category, what claims are hard to prove and the essential ingredients, which include retinol, vitamins C and E, peptides and caffeine.

The final stage of the testing process saw the staff at reviews.com testing the products on their own skin, to determine any sensitivities and to make records of any visible improvements to the skin around the eyes.
