The acquisition brings more natural ingredients and more local and regional markets to the Givaudan business.

With headquarters in Lincoln Park, New Jersey, Ungerer has been sourcing and suppling flavor and fragrance ingredients since 1893. In November of last year, Givaudan announced plans to acquire Ungerger & Company. Today, that acquisition is complete.

“It’s an exciting day as we welcome Ungerer employees to the Givaudan family,” Gilles Andrier, CEO at Givaudan says in the company media release about the acquisition. “Acquiring Ungerer,” he says, “fits very well with our long-term strategy for our core businessin flavours and fragrances.”

Specialty fragrance ingredients and local markets

Ungerer supplies inputs for both fine fragrance as well as for scented personal care. The personal care info page on the company’s site explains that, “From invigorating shower gels to luxurious body creams - and everywhere in between - our creative team produces scents that create desire and resonate with consumers. We have a proven track record of developing high-quality, high-performance and regulatory compliant fragrances for soaps, skin and hair care, bathing, body, deodorants, and baby products.”

It is, in part, that track record with customers in the US, Latin America, Europe, and Asia that made the company a desirable addition to the Givaudan business: “They have an excellent reputation in the market, thanks to the qualityof their specialty ingredients as well as their strong position in the fast growing local and regionalcustomer segment,” Andrier tells the press.

“We have great respect,” he says, “for the company and are very confident that theacquisition will further enhance our industry leadership, both through the vertical integration intokey specialty ingredients for our flavour and fragrance creations, as well as in asserting ourleadership with local and regional customers.”

Dollars and details

The financial terms of the Ungerer acquisition were not made public. But today’s media release does state that Givaudan purchased the business with exiting resources and that “Ungerer’s business would have represented approximately USD 250 million of incremental sales to Givaudan’s results in 2019 on a proforma basis.”

Ungerer has facilities or offices in some 60 countries worldwide, owns 6 R&D labs, and 8 manufacturing facilities.
