Trichologist Penny James first began her partnership with Oribe Hair Care in 2022 to help the brand further develop its Serene Scalp Collection.
This has led to the birth of the new Densifying Collection, an extension of the Serene Scalp Collection, which focuses on scalp health to target fragile, thinning hair.
According to Oribe, the term “thinning hair” generates over 1m searches per month.
“Oribe recognised that there was no existing solution for thinning hair that was equally luxurious and effective, and wanted to change that. Hair loss affects millions, yet existing treatments often feel clinical and uninviting. Together, we collaborated to create authentic formulas to address this untapped need in the market.
“The Serene Scalp Densifying Collection uses plant-based ingredients that help restore fullness, density, and volume to thinning and fine hair without the potential side effects of medicated solutions.
“Three main ingredients featured in the collection — Capixyl, Redensyl, and pea sprout extract — fortify, nourish and balance the scalp, enhancing hair density, thickness and strength, all while creating an optimal environment for healthy hair growth,” James told CosmeticsDesign-Asia.
Specifically, Capixyl is a biomimetic peptide combined with red clover extract that creates thicker, healthier hair; Redensyl helps reduce hair fall and increase fullness; and pea sprout extract is rich in phytonutrients to nourish the scalp and replenish brittle hair.
The Serene Scalp Densifying Treatment Spray also contains a polymer that is said to “instantly add volume and body” to hair, while biotin and niacinamide help restore hair elasticity, smooth the cuticle, and fortify damaged weakened hair, and peppermint oil provides a soothing effect on the scalp.
Sharing on the concerns faced by people with thinning hair, James said, “They are acutely aware of the areas on their scalp that are thinning. Those who feel self-conscious will often wear hats or pull hair into a ponytail to protect the thinning areas from being exposed.
“People want to be able to talk to their hairstylist about what they can do to protect, thicken, and nourish the hair they have. Oribe’s Serene Scalp Densifying Collection offers a solution [to these problems].”
Common causes for thinning hair
Two common causes that contribute to thinning hair are hormonal imbalance and ageing, said James.
“Pregnancy hormones can cause temporary postpartum hair loss. While pregnant, 98% of the hair is in the anagen (growth) phase due to an increase of oestrogen. During postpartum, the hair begins to transition to the telogen (resting or falling out) stage.
“Over a six-week period, only 76% of hair is in the growth phase and remains low for about three months, until the body’s hormones can regulate themselves again.”
Due to hormones affiliated with menopause, hair follicles can shrink, resulting in finer or thinner hair. The growth rate of hair can also shorten during this time, in which hair may grow more slowly and hair fall can occur more rapidly.
Lifestyle and nutrition factors, such as poor diet and vitamin deficiencies, and prolonged stress can also accelerate the ageing of hair follicles.
James noted that it is a “very exciting time” for new science-backed hair care products that cater to ageing hair and skin.
“People are increasingly realising that their scalp is an extension of the skin on their face, so the hair and scalp care industry will draw inspiration from skin care treatments that target oxidative stress, and apply similar ingredients and ideas to products for the scalp and hair.
“Right now, there are a lot of studies being done on how to keep hair in the anagen stage longer, as well as slowing down oxidative stress-induced changes in the dermis and epidermis.
“Oribe is leaning into new innovative data-driven treatments, and helping people feel that there shouldn’t be a stigma about hair loss. Together, we’ve started to educate consumers, and given them a sophisticated and luxurious solution that preserves a sense of dignity while confronting their hair thinning problems.”
