China’s premium scalp care market is currently experiencing massive growth, expanding at a rate of 190% and valued over RMB33bn (USD4.6bn), according to the company.
With evolving consumer demands and diverse needs for scalp health, simply focusing on cleansing is no longer sufficient to satisfy their desire for a premium experience.
“The key to a healthy scalp lies in fundamental repair at the cellular level. CLEAR is now focusing on cell science. The Scalpceuticals Pro Range embodies the brand’s 50 years of scientific research, and unites the efforts of five global labs and more than 200 dermatologists,” said Elsharkawy Mohamed, Hair Care Marketing Director of Unilever China and Global Vice President of CLEAR.
This series features a “revolutionary” cellular-level hair repair technology matrix that is designed to precisely target the core issues of oiliness, dandruff, and sensitivity, helping to build a healthy scalp environment.
Specifically, the products in this range are made using three patented technologies.
The Selenium Disulfide Anti-Dandruff Shampoo incorporates Unilever’s proprietary Selenium Disulfide PRO Technology, which strengthens the protein skeleton and outer walls of barrier cells to eliminate and prevent dandruff at its root.
The brand claims that it is able to clear 99% of flakes in one wash, and correct oiliness, dandruff, and itch in four weeks.
For recurrent dandruff problems, the Anti-Dandruff Conditioning Shampoo utilises Piroctone Olamine technology to not only curb dandruff, but also to improve the scalp environment, boosting dandruff resistance by 500%.
In addition, the Oil Control Shampoo addresses excessive sebum secretion via the Sebum-Reg technology, which inhibits scalp oil production for a purer and better-controlled scalp. It has been clinically proven to alleviate oily hair in four weeks.
Specially formulated for sensitive scalps, the Soothing and Repairing Shampoo contains SENSICARE, an ingredient that specifically blocks irritation-causing signals, including dryness, itchiness, tightness, and redness.
“In the new era of scalp care, treatment should not remain superficial. CLEAR’s technological approach is about ‘rebuilding the foundation’ by synergistically managing cell metabolism and the scalp microbiome to help restore scalp health,” Eric Han, Head of R&D for Unilever Beauty & Well-being North Asia, stated.
From practical function to science-backed
According to CLEAR, the newly launched range serves to meet the growing consumer demand for premium products.
“CLEAR is benefiting from the innovative energy of the Chinese market to continuously push technological boundaries, taking this cellular-level repair standard, which originated from Chinese consumer needs, to a global stage.”
The brand also believes that its innovations would accelerate the hair care industry’s adoption of a more scientific approach.
“CLEAR has dedicated over 50 years to in-depth scalp research. The Scalpceuticals Pro Range represents a vibrant step in the brand’s ongoing commitment to its premiumisation strategy and its exploration of localised innovation within China.
“China is not only a significant global consumer market, but is also becoming an innovation hub for the beauty and hair care industry. By deeply integrating into China’s innovation ecosystem, we are upgrading from functional to science-backed products, and from products to systems — thereby injecting momentum into the transformation and sustainable growth of the industry globally,” said Chen Ge, President of Unilever China.
