After releasing Watermelon Glow SPF Lotion, Glow Recipe “listened closely” to feedback from its community and reworked on the formulation, leading to the introduction of the new Watermelon Glow Dew Shield Hydrating Fluid SPF 30 this June.
“The excitement from our community [about our first sunscreen] was incredible but we received honest feedback that the formula wasn’t quite right and caused pilling. As a brand, we value transparency and take feedback to heart, so we went back to the lab to create a completely new formula — a weightless sunscreen made with clean chemical UV filters for broad-spectrum protection that leaves no white cast or pilling, just glowing skin.
“We wanted to create a product that included the best parts of a Korean sunscreen — hydrating, lightweight texture, and seamless application — but created in the US and accessible for everyone. We are so excited for our community to try it out and are confident they will love it,” Christine Chang, co-founder and co-CEO of Glow Recipe, told CosmeticsDesign-Asia.
The key ingredients in this product are namely UV filters (Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate) to reduce dark spots and hyperpigmentation on cheeks caused by sunexposure while improving skin texture and minimising the appearance of pores; glycerin, watermelon seed oil, and vitamin E to soothe dryness and irritation, hydrate skin, and improve redness; and niacinamide to brighten skin and help combat existing sun spots.
“We are so proud of this product because it combines Korean skin care innovations with powerful yet gentle ingredients to create a multifunctional daily sunscreen that you actually want to wear.
“Dew Shield goes beyond UV protection. It’s clinically tested to increase skin hydration immediately after applying, after 24 hours, and after two weeks of use. It has a fluid texture that feels incredibly light and nourishing on the skin, almost like your favourite daily moisturiser,” added Sarah Lee, co-founder and co-CEO of Glow Recipe.
Claims warranted
With sunscreen claims coming under the spotlight following the Honasa Consumer Ltd and Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) legal dispute in India, Chang asserted that Glow Recipe is committed to transparency and scientific integrity in all product claims.
“For Dew Shield SPF 30, our formula underwent FDA-mandated SPF testing to confirm its broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. We also tested using ISO protocols, which are widely accepted in the EU and globally to ensure consistent and effective sun protection.
“Additionally, our sunscreen meets the PA+++ standard, a metric commonly used in Asia to measure UVA efficacy. The product has been dermatologist-, ophthalmologist- and clinically tested to be non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin. It’s gentle enough to be used on children aged three years and older, which we also tested for. We published all of these results on our Instagram for full transparency with our community.”
Meeting demands
Due to its “blendability and weightlessness”, the Watermelon Glow Dew Shield Hydrating Fluid SPF 30 can be worn on its own — doubling as a morning moisturiser — or used under makeup for a supple look.
As reapplication is crucial for ample sun protection, it can also be paired with the Watermelon Glow Dew Balm, which can be applied over light makeup to protect against UV rays, and keep skin fresh and hydrated.
“We’ve seen global demand for multi-use formulas that hydrate, protect and work well as a makeup primer, and Korean sunscreens have become popular in that space,” said Chang.
In response to this growing demand, the new Dew Shield sunscreen has been launched in over 30 markets across South East Asia, Hong Kong, Middle East, North and South America, Europe, and the UK.
