PolyOne has introduced a new additive for FDA-regulated PET
designed for use in health and beauty packaging applications. OnCap
AA scavenger aims to reduce the risk of odor and taste build-up
associated with some types of PET packaging, reports Simon

The additive has been developed to reduce acetaldehyde acid (AA) in PET by up to 82 per cent and solves AA-related taste and odor issues, which means it falls in line with FDA-regulated cosmetic and food applications.

OnCap AA scavenger additive is less costly and can be used at lower rates than traditional AA-reducing solutions, the company claims. The additive is available as a pellet or liquid as well as in an OnColor Smartbatch concentrate, an integrated solution that combines colorants and additives in one masterbatch.

Polyone, which has a current sales turnover of $2 billion and manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and Asia, says its additive product also complements the company's existing PET ultraviolet-light-inhibiting additive product line.

"The AA scavenger product enhances the variety of thermoplastic additives available through our OnCap thermoplastic additives product family," said Peter Prusak, director of technology for PolyOne's Color and Additives Masterbatches Group.

"It overcomes significant technology challenges associated with the performance and processing of PET products for both food and non-food packaging applications," he added.

PolyOne's OnCap thermoplastic additive product family contains a range of performance, process and purge additives. This includes an anti-static additive that prevents dust build-up on PET packaging, reduce scuffing as well as acting as a slip agent for PET performs.

Designed for opaque and translucent PET bottles and used especially in health and beauty and packaging, the OnCap anti-static additives are said to eliminate costly secondary processing steps because it is incorporated directly into the plastic.
