Companies in Asia are already working with educational institutions to offer internships and attract fresh graduates to the cosmetics industry. Clariant is among those on the lookout for fresh talent..

The Swiss firm created a 24-month graduate programme, designed for Ph.D. or Master graduates in chemistry, engineering or business studies in Singapore.

The Clariant International Graduate Program (CIGP), which includes six months of working abroad, is similar to a post-graduate degree but focuses heavily on gaining exposure to a variety of company functions.

"We hope to attract a pool of talents and potential leaders," says Mr Chew Kok How, Clariant's South-east Asia and Pacific head of sales for the catalysts business unit.

How it works

The program is based on the rotation principle with clearly defined projects, and you will gain a broad overview of the Group and be trained to become a potential leader.

"The focus of the program is on our growth regions, but there will be occasional openings in other countries. The aim is to provide us with a pool of regional talent and potential future leaders. And to get your career off to a flying start in an international environment."

The program is reported to provide an opportunity to gain an overview of the organization, build up a network and glimpse horizons beyond the student's own special area.

Each six-month module has been established around a technical or business related project, depending on the individual's field of study and interest.

"Trainees are not obliged to follow a predefined path or specific modules, but there will be a clear focus on one of your strengths, be it R&D, Process Engineering or Business Studies."

Singapore investment

Clariant recently held an opening ceremony to celebrate the inauguration of its application lab in Singapore, one it hopes will interact with customers to 'develop tomorrow’s megatrends in Asia Pacific'.

The new 'consumer care center' will be connected to a global network of marketing, application and technology divisions where experts can provide 'unique' ideas and solutions to solve customers unmet needs in the region.

According to Francois Bleger, regional head of Clariant South East Asia and Pacific, the lab will act as a new kind of platform for customers to interact and jointly formulate answers to the consumers demand of tomorrow.

"The launch of our center for the personal care and home market will offer unique sensorial testing to help our partners to find claims for future trends. It also demonstrates our full commitment to pursuing innovation excellence through local capability," he says.
