‘You won’t be compared to anyone else’: How Gen AI can accelerate beauty inclusivity in Asia

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) presents an opportunity to foster inclusivity in the Asian beauty landscape through its ability to hyper personalise and cater to diverse needs and concerns.

The societal impact of generative AI has been extensively discussed, including its effects on the beauty industry.

Dove, a leader in pushing back against unrealistic beauty standards, has come out to say that “artificial intelligence presents a new threat to real beauty” and that it was emerging as “a clear threat to women’s wellbeing”.

In April 2024, the brand admirably reaffirmed its commitment to “real beauty” by pledging never to use AI-generated content to represent women.

However, Anastasia Georgievskaya asserts that gen AI has a place in beauty and can even be a tool to aid diversity and inclusivity.

Georgievskaya is the CEO and co-founder of Haut.AI, which has developed programmes such as SkinGPT, which enables users to upload their photos and apply AI to simulate how their skin will change over time when using certain skin care products.

Her firm is on the verge of launching SkinChat, an AI-powered tool that allows anyone to learn more about their skin through a simple chat function.

SkinChat, Georgievskaya believes, will be an asset in regions like Asia, where diversity and personalisation are key.

“With SkinChat, this generative AI component brings this amazing personalisation for the Asian population… Quite often, there's an idea of the Asian 'type'. Usually, it's someone that has fair skin and long black hair and that's pretty much it. But this does not reflect the truth because Asia is super diverse where you can find a range of skin tones, and hair types.

“SkinChat can help every consumer not just chat about skin in general but their own skin concerns or other factors like ethnic background, natural melanin levels... Consumers won’t be compared to everyone else; we are bringing the conversation just to this person specifically.”

Georgievskaya told the Beauty Broadcast that the tool is based on “diverse knowledge” that the firm has curated itself.

On the flipside, a human could have preconceived notions of a certain group of people, which can impact how products are recommended or developed even.
